Have you ever wanted someone to rub a dark bruise on your body? Has anyone ever poked your bruise?

I have been lucky to have many massages in some of the best spas in the world, some great and some plain ” really, I must pay for that?”. Laughs aside, I have been on both the receiving side and the giving side. I love giving massage, it is truly a masterpiece set to music.

I have studied various techniques: Swedish, Advanced Aromatherapy ( under eve Taylor..the matriarch of Aromatherapy), Dr Vodder Lymph ( yes, so different to bog -standard lymph drainage), Sports, Thai, Ayurveda and Mama point ( under Melanie Sachs,California), Acupressure, Chinese massage, Shiatsu, Japanese Shiatsu ( under Ohashi at the Touch Institute in New York), Lastone , Reflexology, Spinal Stress therapy, Indian Head… and Hydrotherm massage.

When I have the time, I train the staff to better their repertoires, broaden their knowledge and understanding of what a true masterpiece feels like to give a client. Massage is like a symphony. Notes of high and low must swing, rhythmically over a body. Varying pressure to induce specific and different responses. How sad it is to hear that clients only want a deep tissue massage. No fault of their own, as our industry has portrayed this massage as the only method to help alleviate stressed muscles, pain and fatigue.

My response is always this…”Ever want someone to rub a dark bruise on your body? Has anyone ever poked your bruise? “. Our muscles lying below layers of skin and fat are in fact bruised, we just can’t see the bruise. Then we order up a 60min deep tissue massage, lie prostrate on the bed with tense expectations that pain will ensue and that it is good to feel the pain. Our minds cannot switch off, we breath through the worst parts and then gingerly ease our way home for a hot shower, red wine and anti-inflammatories.

Dear reader, please don’t get me wrong, I am not against deep tissue. It is a valuable tool, but needs to be in its’ place in the symphony. Imagine just listening to the heavy drum beat in the orchestra, mind-numbing!. And that is exactly what happens when you apply the same deep pressure all the time, the nerves become agitated and area becomes numb. No, we need our skills and understanding of the body to recreate an individual masterpiece for each client by using various techniques, pressures and speed. And we want our clients to be given the knowledge that there is more to a massage than just deep tissue:)

Over the next few blogs, I’ll be introducing you to the world of massage and the “WHAT/WHY/HOW” our new Cortisol Reducing-Treatment came about… ( and of which our client, Anton is raving about…thanks Anton!)

Pastel nail colours for Spring… our new nail services

Ever wondered how those in the media’s scrutiny can maintain such lovely, well-groomed manicures. Always polished, chip-free and immaculate. I think of Kate Middelton’s subtle ‘pink’ nail shine, always short, pretty and shiny. A definite serene background to show off any big sparkler on her finger. Or, Mrs Beckham? Short, dark and vampy. Yet, always polished and ‘freshly painted’.

Whether one is pouring over magazines, rumbling through silk dresses or picking up after little children, we can all have the same set of polished, chip- free nails. ( And we don’t need a personal stylist to have it either.)

So which nail service is truly the best for our nails? We have tried many systems, classical and just plain ‘copy cat’. we have sat and listened to the converted wax lyrical on why their system is the best. We have tried and we have failed. Some cases done well, but overall failed.

Why? Have you ever had a good blow dry? You know when you have. Hair is bouncy, shiny and lasts for days…that is the key…lasts for days.. Same with nails. Top shine, chip-free that lasts for days. Quite honestly, some cases fail as we chew our nails, pick or peel the nail polish. Sometimes, without even knowing and then announce, unaware, “we have not done anything to our nails, must be the nail technician.”.

So, dear readers, my belief in a nail system that paints on like nail polish and lasts for 2 weeks is truly is as thin as the nail polishes in question.

Yet, we try our very best to offer our clients the best systems. And with much deliberation, testing and retesting, I do believe we have found an answer.: Biosculpture’s new Express Gel Treatment. So bring your little fingers and let the journey begin. Dive into a host of beautiful colours and leave Smoothe knowing that you will be walking your own red-carpet with shiny, well-groomed nails.

Brow Trends

It’s high time for high brows to give way to the low arch look. A recent Journal of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery study completed by researchers at Johns Hopkins University and University of Regensburg found interesting arch trends. Keep these in mind when visiting your brow expert.
Those surveyed consider the low brow more attractive. It curves low over the eye and reaches a peak height about two-thirds of the way along. Younger people in particular prefer this look.
Women are seeking plastic surgery solutions to create the low eyebrow look.
Often brows are shaped too high, leaving clients with an unnatural astonished expression and an old, dated look.
The thinner, pointed arch brow ages a person’s face by up to 5 years.
Low brows are here to stay, research say this subtle arch is the shape of the future
